Summary |
The Confederate Raider Alabama - The Alabama was one of the most remarkable warships that ever roamed the sea under and American flag, and her commander, Admiral Raphael Semmes, was as remarkable as his ship. Brilliant, outspoken, daring, Semmes was a colorful and challenging figure, and his expoits in the Confederate Navy constitute a memorable chapter in American military history. His enemies called him a pirate and threatened to hang him, but they never had the chance. He sailed halfway around the world to destroy Union merchant vessels, and such was his skill that he always managed to give his pursuers the slip. Even when he lost the Alabama in battle with the U.S. Kearsarge, he escaped on a British yacht that was nearby. Semmes' experiences were forst [ib;osjed om 1869 in a volume entitled Memoirs of Service Afloat During the War Beteen The States. From this original work, historian Philip Van Doren Stern has culled the unusual, fascinating adventures that appear in this special Premier edition. Included also is a chapter detailing, the fatal fight with the Kearsarge, an account by John McIntosh Kell, the executive officer of the Alabama. |
